The Street Art Show at Opera Gallery

Rich Simmons "Homeless Superman"

I normally am not this much of an ass, but this was too good to pass up and not post. I have heard about this show at Opera Gallery for awhile now, as I am sure most of you have as well. I may have been able to overlook the ridiculous name of the show, The Street Art Show, because of the incredible line-up: Keith Haring, Jean-Michael Basquiat, Banksy, Blek Le Rat, Seen, Ron English, Logan Hicks, Crash, The London Police, Nick Walker, How & Nosm, Saber, ROA, D*Face, Sweet Toof, Mr. Jago, b., Swoon, Kid Zoom, ALEXONE, Anthony Lister, Alexandrous Vasmoulakis and Rich Simmons, but then I remembered that this is still a show put on by Opera Gallery, the home of the beloved Mr. Brainwash. They do put on good show as well as some really shit ones, and I really do want this to be good, but that association still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Plus I cannot help, but feel a bit suspicious since the show is launching on the heels of Art in the Streets.

The Street Art Show seems to be more for the collectors’ benefit who are still salivating over the interest in the LAMOCA show and want to buy more/start buying some pieces for their own collections. Well, at least Mr. Brainwash isn’t an option this time around, although i am sure he will be again soon enough.

The show opens June 17th at Opera Gallery in London.

All right, so just because LA’s MOCA just did a show on street art, no one else should for a year or so?
What about the book by Ket that was just released? Is that suspicious too? Is he genuinely interested in street art or just surfing on the trend?

Also, was your hate of MBW a condition to be able to write in RJ’s blog?

Of course other museums/galleries should do shows involving street art. I’ll be posting later today about a street art show another museum. I posted recently about a California graffiti show at a museum. Those are both interesting. And Black Rat Projects has a good show on right now with work by Swoon, Banksy, Os Gemeos and Shepard Fairey. Galleries in LA did lots of shows last month that intentionally overlapped with Art In The Streets, and while that was opportunistic, those shows weren’t so crass. The point here is that Opera is the definition of “commercial” gallery. Of course art galleries are commercial ventures, but Opera takes it to a new level with shows like their recent South Park themed show in NYC and their repping of Mr. Brainwash. At Opera, I get the vibe that their collectors buy art like they buy couches, and Opera loves it that way. If that makes any sense…

While a dislike of Mr. Brainwash’s artwork is not a condition of writing for Vandalog, I’d be unlikely to put someone on staff who likes his work. My site after all. There are a lot of things that Vandalog writers disagree about, but I don’t think anyone likes MBW.

we actually have an “I hate Mr. Brainwash” club that began in 2009. I’m the secretary. If you want minutes from passed meetings, send me an e-mail and I can hook you up.

Hate is a very negative emotion that uses up a lot of energy. You must have a lot of time on your hands. Every time hateful words come out of your mouth you lose 2 minutes of your life.Fact. Choose your path.

I would actually very genuinely be interested in reading those. I will send you an email when The Street Art Show is over.

If you want to come to the preview of the above (I promise that MBW will not be here), let me know and I’ll be more than happy to meet you in person and introduce you to some of the cool street artists who are featured.

Interesting. Opera has sent an anonymous operative to comment on Vandalog. Well at least now we know he/she works for Opera.

Or is a friend, or a son/daughter, or an artist… Who knows.
Thanks for the reply anyway, as long as we can discuss views, all criticism is welcome.
