KIDULT “Illegalize Graffiti”

KIDULT ITW (uncensored) “ILLEGALIZE GRAFFITI” from eric on Vimeo.

French graffiti artist KIDULT released this video documenting some of his work on the streets of Paris a few days ago. For thos who aren’t familiar with him, KIDULT uses a fire extinguisher to spray paint on the side of stores. He is concerned with high end luxury brands, like ZEVS, and how hypocritical their place is in a society that predominantly lives under the poverty level.

Fair warning, parts of it are in French which is a bit annoying at times.

I can’t decide if I love or hate Kidult. Basically because I don’t know how honest he is. He uses all the techniques of the people he criticizes (flashy videos, no transparency, viral marketing…) very well. So the question arises of if he is being legit or not about all this. Maybe the whole thing is a campaign to be the next fake-revolutionary who will be co-opted by these brands in some way quite soon, or find a way (like Banksy) to operate just like these brands outside of their traditions methods. Or maybe he is legit and just very smart, so he turned these methods against the very people who traditionally use them. It’s difficult to tell, but there has been speculation that some of these are fake (http://www.flickr.com/photos/34548134@N07/5429585045/ and http://www.allcityblog.fr/16777-kidult-vs-agnes-b/ and http://melroseandfairfax.blogspot.com/2011/05/kidult-bombing-of-mr-brainwashs-wall-is.html). But if they are fake, what impact does that have? Katsu has done fake videos before.
