New from Mobstr

Mobstr. He’s definitely want to keep an eye on. Always up to something. Mobstr is one of the few street artists out there who have been heavily influenced by Banksy, but are actually at least as creative as him.

Then again, I recently had the chance to meet John Fekner and Don Leicht; John is the true godfather of text-based stencils and (along with a few others) political stencils as art, so maybe we should stop crediting Banksy with that distinction. But John and Don are another (upcoming) post entirely.

Back to Mobstr. Another great piece he’s put up recently is this billboard:

A cool piece, but what really makes it work is this story from Mobstr:

When I was photographing this an old lady approached me and questioned, “Do you mind me asking why you are photographing that?”

“Because its weird init,” I replied.

“I think its stupid,” the old lady stated, “It’s a waste of space.”

…………my thoughts exactly.

yeah you can tell Mobstr has been influenced by Banksy, those ready made, advertising like statements I have seen somewhere. I agree with the old lady, it doesn’t mean anything and is not proposing anything new. John’s work looks interesting. in your posts would be nice not to group things that don’t work on the same level, ta.

But now that Banksy isn’t anti-advertising anymore, somebody needs keep doing that. Of course, the Billboard Liberation Front is also doing great things.

yes you are right. it’s good that there is a new generation out there, but i can’t help to think that there is no way you gonna compete with corporations (some we are talking multi-billion). also i find the argument of reclaiming space not a valid one. you can’t reclaim a space if you haven’t paid for it in the first place and even if you had the money to pay for advertising space you wouldn’t be able to put up your art… unless you ar promoting Exit through….

Although Banksy did rent out billboard space to have signpainters who usually paint advertisements make this artwork – http://www.flickr.com/photos/denial_land/2911479223/

But yeah, now he is just using advertising space to advertise his film.

Brad, what makes you think the work on the billboard is trying to say anything at all. Maybe you are over analysing? Maybe it is stupid, like the old lady said, but is self accepting of that idea. This is one ingredient, for example, of a type of comedy. Who knows? I haven’t made up my mind about it. It could mean a million different things or nothing at all; depends on individual perception, I suppose. Either way comparisons can be very loose and even if the comparison is simply different artists using text I appreciate that. Its nice the different range of use of text of these 3 mentioned artists.
