New from Banksy: Zorro
Posted: August 25th, 2009 | Author: RJ | Category: Art News, Featured Posts, Photos | Tags: banksy | 9 Comments »Looks like this could be the latest Banksy piece, captured by Romanywg in Westbourne Park, London. It hasn’t been confirmed as a Banksy yet by his own website or anything, but street art authorities are calling a Banksy, the style fits and there is a similar sketch in his show at The Bristol Museum, so I think it’s a safe bet.
Zorro is an interesting subject for Banksy to paint, as NoLionsInEngland has noted on WallKandy: “Zorro defended peasants from the tyrannical authority of officials and aristocrats, as ‘does’ Banksy; Zorro was the alter-ego of a knight or some kind of aristocrat, and certain newspapers seem convinced that Banksy is/was a mild-mannered public school poshie.”

I think its a highwayman dude… He is commenting on the dangers of the A40 as many people have died there. But the image is him going back to his roots (He has hit the A40 several times before with rats and other bits) Plus this is one route out of London to Bristol and the main trainline out to Bristol. Just my view.
Makes sense. I was wondering what the slogan was about. But then why is Zorro warning people?
I’ve got a feeling it could be Dick Turpin, the infamous English highwayman.
Another possibility is The Lone Ranger as unusualimage suggests on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/unusual_image/3626268517/in/set-72157619701654456/), but The Lone Ranger wears blue and the hat doesn’t really make sense for him.
It’s just been suggested to me that the piece is actually by Focus, based on this piece – http://www.flickr.com/photos/27071671@N07/3017778664/
I’m still confident that it’s by Banksy though.
Has it been confirmed that it’s definitely Banksy yet?
No, but it was months before Banksy put those photos on his website of his trip to Mali.
Zorro wears a mask, not scarf over his face… I vote for highwayman
it is more visible from the top deck of a bus going past Westbourne PArk Station.
